i think ascii art is underappreciated. i'd say it's a cousin to pixel art,
but people take it much less seriously. is it because it's generally kinda
wonky looking and monochrome? is it because it feels like what you settle
for when you can't display graphics? dunno
it's a lot more finicky than pixel art is, though. not only do you not have
a square pixel aspect ratio (each character is taller than it is wide) but
the angles of lines you can draw are SEVERELY limited
like okay, in pixel art you want to avoid the thing on the left (often barfed
out by line tools)

ascii art feels similar to this sort of thing. like it pushes you towards
certain angles, but you don't get any nice 45 degree lines like in pixel art
here's some examples of what "works" in ascii:

it's not really ideal. you can make things that are more horizontally sloped
easily enough, but what if i want something more vertical (without being
straight up and down)?

the gaps are a lot more obvious than with the more horizontal lines. and
the one on the right is just horrific. so i tend to avoid that sort of
angle as much as possible!
the weird restrictions like this are kind of fun to work around though! it
can feel like doing a puzzle. it's kind of satisfying figuring out some
little trick like using an L or a Y or a 7 to get the shape you want
everything in here was typed by hand in a text editor, with the exception of
the external building shot. that was done in jave. (i also used jave to do
some minor fixes to the peaches pic -- selecting stuff and moving it,
basically)

i was really hoping to make more ascii art for this but i kind of ran out of
steam after that big peaches pic, haha
so to prolong it, you could print it out and connect the spaces in the ascii
art! and color it in! or fold the paper into an airplane! the printed
pages work great for putting a slice of pizza on! or for trying to wipe up
a spill!
i didn't wanna be all like ASSWOLF.TXT #1 up at the top, but who knows!
make some ascii art and send it to me and i'll put it in ASSWOL~2.TXT if
that ends up being a thing!
